How I operate

Private training is tailored to suit your needs.

First you will need to fill in the application form.

Then we will develop a plan to attack problems.

This begins with a first consultation at your home.

The second consultation, usually 5 weeks later, will either be at your home or in an environment suited to the problem at hand.

Between consultations we will communicate regularly.

The training process

I offer 2 sessions initially, the first being at your home. This home visit will touch on all the concerns you have raised.

The second consultation will target a problem that concerns you. This consultation will be in a real life situation where possible, such as a street walk.

Two types of consultation

For common behaviour issues

Often common behaviour issues i.e. lunging on the lead or barking at other dogs requires the trainer to go back to basics.

These basics will be explained or demonstrated and will require you to practise.

Aggressive or just fearful?

For aggression issues

Detective skills are essential - "motive, means, opportunity!" Safety and re-direction are important and we might begin with some basic training.

Aggression programs can take weeks or months and we will be in touch constantly over the next weeks.

This training starts in your home.

My approach to common training issues

Where does the problem behaviour occur

If these behaviours usually occur when your dog is on lead, then fear is the most likely cause. However, if it happens when the dog is off lead, then we might be looking at an aggression problem. I will look for signs to indicate which of these might be the cause.

Toileting inside

This is mostly a simple problem to fix and can usually be done in 2 sessions.

The fix is simple as long as you follow my instructions faithfully over several weeks.

Sadly, not all of these cases can be fixed. If I believe that this is the case, I will tell you so, and not take your money.

Fighting dogs

Dogs fighting together at home can usually be readily solved.

Often a change of diet will help but, in rare cases, you might need to see a vet to get temporary medication.

In most cases crating will be necessary

My dog ignores me

Sorry about this, but it is almost always the fault of the human.

This means back to the basics!

For this to be fixed, everybody in the household must be on board.

These will be addressed one at a time over several weeks.

The most common cause of training problems

Me dog ... you human!

Problem dogs are usually confused dogs.

By improving our understanding of how dogs communicate we can sort out the confusion.

So, let me show you how to communicate in dog - not just in spoken words.
